Meet Samantha Johnson, 2017 Legacy & WingTapper Tour Scholarship Winner, representing the Tohono O'odham Tribal Nation

"Samantha is the daughter of Donna and Thomas Johnson. I think it’s really important to also make sure that the parents are recognized because mom and dad are always there to push her, and you're usually the driving force. Samantha has gone to school at the Barbiquiveri Unified School District in Sells. She has been there from kindergarten all the way to 12th grade and her last, or her senior year, she graduated from Tucson Magnet High School and actually she graduated 109 out of 734 seniors. So yes… this is Samantha…she’s a natural leader. Samantha is one that we recognize as a leader and she takes her leadership role seriously… to the point where he knows how she spends her summers, going to these summer youth leadership conferences and she raises money to attend these on her own. She was the winner of an essay contest that we had recently. It was co-sponsored by the Tohono O’odham Tribe and Community Action team, who hosted the 4th annual Youth Agricultural day, where she wrote an essay on farming. She has numerous other accolades also, and I could stay in here probably for 20 minutes and tell you about her. The other two things I need to say is that she's a participant of the University of Arizona stem mentorship pipeline program and then she is going to be a freshman at U of A majoring in geosciences. So that is Samantha in a nutshell."

I challenge myself to do better because I see what I do not want for my life, people going toward negative paths, or have negativity to share is why I want to remain positive and excel!

-Samantha Johnson

Why do you want to participate in the 2017 Legacy Tour to DC & NYC, Celebrating Women in History? What do you expect to learn and why do you deserve to go?

I hope to be inspired by successful women and experience a positive and motivating environment. The area I'd like to grow in is communication. I know I can be more confident when speaking to others. i believe i deserve to go because i can be voice for young girls in my community. I have had the opportunity to attend leadership programs and travel throughout my early high school years and I want to be able to built upon my existing experience. I have a niece and I want to share my experiences and help guide her in a positive path. By my example, she will see that women and girls are strong and intelligent.

Now, if you had to Tweet us a reason, what would that be?

I'd love to learn stronger communication skills

What inspires you?

When there is negativity around me, it drives me to do better. I already want to continuously challenge myself to do well, in school, in athletics and my home life. I challenge myself to do better because I see what i do not want for my life, people going toward negative paths, or have negativity to share is why I want to remain positive and excel!

What is one thing you need to make your dreams come true?

To believe in myself. There are times when i doubt myself. My doubt is the only thing that could hold me back from my goals. If I believe in myself my dreams will come true.
